How to Raise Resilient Kids

Resilience is our ability to cope with challenging situations in life and adapt to them. Here are some ways that you can help your child build resilience and learn to deal with difficult situations in a healthy way.

Let them play (and play with them).
Let them be adventurous.
Let them do things independently.
Let them make decisions (age appropriate ones).
Let them make mistakes.
And then fix them.
Teach them how to label their emotions and regulate their emotions.
Practice delayed gratification.
Say no sometimes.
Say yes other times.
Encourage them to find things they love and do them.
Practice healthy routines with them - consistent sleep schedule, nutritious diet, and exercise.
Praise effort, strength, and bravery.
Teach them how to self soothe.
Show them how the world isn't perfect and that S*%# happens.
Help them build reliable coping skills (one's that truly work for them).
Teach them how to build and maintain meaningful relationships.
Teach them to pray and explore their spirituality.
Teach them to be kind and respectful to everyone irrespective of status, race, and gender.
Teach humility.
Teach them that it's ok to make mistakes.
Teach them how to use these mistakes as stepping stones.
Teach them to be persistent and never give up.
Teach them that life is a series of choices that we can make to get to where we want to go.
Teach them to be optimistic and to be truly grateful.
Teach them to selflessly help others.
Teach them to be the bigger person.
Teach them to do the right thing even when its really hard.
Make them read. Encourage them to be avid readers and to read widely.
Teach them not to take life too seriously, but to do important things with seriousness.
Teach them to always give their very best (not the best, but their best).
And that when they do that, they will be satisfied no matter the outcome.
Teach them that it's OK if things don't go their way sometimes.. to have faith.. and that everything will be good in the end...
